The main field of this large, room-sized Kashmiri rug is absolutely packed full of rich floral motif! Nestled within a deep royal blue tertiary medallion, a large sky blue medallion pierces the centre of this rugs composition. Unlike its Persian counterparts this medallion is not composed of geometric patterning. Instead, its continues to host seemingly countless floral motifs, like those found in the rugs extended main field. The blues, ochres and creams provide this rug’s dominant colour scheme and are organic in character, which perfectly complements the repeated floral motifs that play out across the face of this fine piece. This busy Kashmiri rug really is a joy to behold.
It is not common to stand above such a richly decorated rug and attempt to comprehend the number of different species and designs that are dancing across its surface. It is quite a treat. The main field of this rug is corner framed by three further ochre and midnight blue bands, which are again packed with floral imagery. After this no less than 9 concentric yellow and ochre bands frame the centre of the piece, with the 5th and largest band sporting a number of pale blue and soft yellow flower buds.
Kashmiri rugs are famed for their strong pile integrity and fine wool. And this rug is no exception. This Kashmiri rug is made with the finest Kork wool, a wool that is taken from a shoulder or flanks of shearing lambs, and its patterning appears remarkably crisp and fine as a result.
Rug production in the Kashmir has been active for hundreds of years. After the import of Persian artisans over 500 years ago Kashmiri rugs became, unsurprisingly, heavily influenced and increasingly Persian in character, composition and motif. Since then the name of the north Indian region has become synonymous with high quality rug manufacture.
This Kashmiri rug is a triumph of bold patterning. In the correct space, this rug could provide an exciting, statement flare to a medium to large sized room’s décor. This rug has some areas of yellow staining, which have been partially reduced by our rug cleaning technicians at the Rugspa and there is also just over 1 square foot of moderate pile wear in the main field of the rug. Fortunately, this is only noticeable upon close inspection, and the physically integrity of the has not be compromised. The fringes remain in an excellent condition.
