The main field of this fine piece displays a repeated red ochre and midnight blue graphic boteh (a common leaf-like motif, very like the western Paisley motif) set on a golden background. The main field is framed by nine concentric bands of varying thickness wehre dots and zig-zags and abstract shapes entertain the eye. Furthermore, in each corner of the main field a red and sky blue variation of the boteh accents this Mir's expansive interior composition. Despite the luxurious golden centre this piece is not too gaudy or brash, and could serve to compliment an already thoughtfully-designed space, rather than demand the focus like other more 'statement' pieces. Persian Sarouk Mirs, for example, often boast vibrant colour schemes, unlike their Indian cousins which tend to feature a more subtle colouring.

Although not captured well on camera there is one feature of this piece that I particularly like which I have attempted to highlight with an orange box in one of the detail images. Roughly one third along the horizontal of this piece you can note a marked colour change in the midnight blue wool, to more of an ultramarine, which runs right across the width of the carpet. As with all our stock this piece is an original hang-weaved rug. In spotting this momentary colour change (the ultramarine band is roughly 8 inches long) you can actually visualise the process-of-making that went into this very rug. The hours spent at the loom. And one cannot help but reflect on the extraordinary amount of human care, devotion and time which goes into crafting a rug of this size. This Mir would have been hand-knotted in northern India, probably in the eastern Uttar Pradesh region, which accounts for roughly 80% of the countries handmade rug manufacture.

This golden Indian Mir remains in a fantastic, near-perfect condition, with no staining and great pile integrity, and would sit well on the floor of almost any home.
